Genealogy

HOME

By: Evelyn Meadows & Carma Lowe

"Woe is me, such misery and pain, for 200 years, my hopes were in vain
Until one of my kind just happened to hear of the gospel restored, and the truth was quite clear.
"You must save your dead to have Eternal Life", but finding the right ones has caused toil and strife.
I've been taught here in Heaven, and I too see the light, if only my kin folks would seal things up right.

Marie Brown is the name which I was born, but the name Mary Brown, my records adorn.
I've wept, and I've wailed and gnashed all my teeth in vain, to inform those offspring beneath.
To be sealed to my man, has long been a dream, but they've joined me to one I've not even seen.

Six children I bore with joy and tears and waited with longing for them through the years.
But sadly to say, there have only been three that those relatives yet have had sealed to me.
To make matters worse, they discovered four others and blandly proclaimed that I was their mother.
Now if that's not enough to in patience withstand, they say I'm 50 years older than I really am.

So, I earnestly beg and implore and beseech to stress accurate care with the people you teach.
In recording the names, the dates, and the places, for fear of adjoining wrong names and wrong places.
Genealogy work that is not rightly spelled may consign "old Joe" to a place that's - oh well.

Just remember to copy each record with care, get your facts straight and always beware of errors in time and above all in names, for another man's wife is never the same -
So be sure that your Temple records are true."

Love - The Essence of the Gospel

Thomas S. Monson - April 2014 General Conference

We cannot truly love God if we do not love our fellow travelers on this mortal journey.

My beloved brothers and sisters, when our Savior ministered among men, He was asked by the inquiring lawyer, “Master, which is the great commandment in the law?”
Matthew records that Jesus responded:
“Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
“This is the first and great commandment.
“And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.”1
Mark concludes the account with the Savior’s statement: “There is none other commandment greater than these.”

Love is the very essence of the gospel, and Jesus Christ is our Exemplar. His life was a legacy of love. The sick He healed; the downtrodden He lifted; the sinner He saved. At the end the angry mob took His life. And yet there rings from Golgotha’s hill the words: “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do”—a crowning expression in mortality of compassion and love.

The year was 1933, when because of the Great Depression, employment opportunities were scarce. The location was the eastern part of the United States. Arlene Biesecker had just graduated from high school. After a lengthy search for employment, she was finally able to obtain work at a clothing mill as a seamstress. The mill workers were paid only for each of the correctly completed pieces they sewed together daily. The more pieces they produced, the more they were paid.
One day shortly after starting at the mill, Arlene was faced with a procedure that had her confused and frustrated. She sat at her sewing machine trying to unpick her unsuccessful attempt to complete the piece on which she was working. There seemed to be no one to help her, for all of the other seamstresses were hurrying to complete as many pieces as they could. Arlene felt helpless and hopeless. Quietly, she began to cry.
Across from Arlene sat Bernice Rock. She was older and more experienced as a seamstress. Observing Arlene’s distress, Bernice left her own work and went to Arlene’s side, kindly giving her instruction and help. She stayed until Arlene gained confidence and was able to successfully complete the piece. Bernice then went back to her own machine, having missed the opportunity to complete as many pieces as she could have, had she not helped.
With this one act of loving kindness, Bernice and Arlene became lifelong friends. Each eventually married and had children. Sometime in the 1950s, Bernice, who was a member of the Church, gave Arlene and her family a copy of the Book of Mormon. In 1960, Arlene and her husband and children were baptized members of the Church. Later they were sealed in a holy temple of God.
As a result of the compassion shown by Bernice as she went out of her way to help one whom she didn’t know but who was in distress and needed assistance, countless individuals, both living and dead, now enjoy the saving ordinances of the gospel.

We should all reach out to others. A smile goes along way. We don't have to give an arm or a leg, a smile will suffice.

Brothers and sisters, some of our greatest opportunities to demonstrate our love will be within the walls of our own homes. Love should be the very heart of family life, and yet sometimes it is not. There can be too much impatience, too much arguing, too many fights, too many tears. Lamented President Gordon B. Hinckley: “Why is it that the [ones] we love [most] become so frequently the targets of our harsh words? Why is it that [we] sometimes speak as if with daggers that cut to the quick?”

The answers to these questions may be different for each of us, and yet the bottom line is that the reasons do not matter. If we would keep the commandment to love one another, we must treat each other with kindness and respect.

Perhaps you will forget tomorrow the kind words you say, but the recipient won't.

Chapter 11: Honoring the Priesthood Keys Restored through Joseph Smith

Opening Song: Hymn 264
Lesson: Chapter 11: Honoring the Priesthood Keys Restored through Joseph Smith

Here are some scriptures that Sister Cannon posted on the board: D & C 21:4-6, D & C 27: 5-13 and 65:2, D & C 28: 8-21, and D & C 32:7

She handed out several questions to help guide you through the lesson.

1. Who in our ward holds the Priesthood keys?
2. When Peter, James, and John restored the Priesthood, were Priesthood keys given?
3. Why did we need to build the Kirtland temple?
Here is an awesome link to a 2 minute video that talks about the priesthood keys that were restored in the Kirtland temple.
4. Which keys did Moses hold?
5. Who holds all the Priesthood keys today?

Here a couple of excerpts that she read from:

President Joseph Fielding Smith declared: “I have a perfect knowledge of the divine mission of the Prophet Joseph Smith. There is no doubt in my mind that the Lord raised him up and gave him revelation, commandment, opened the heavens to him, and called upon him to stand at the head of this glorious dispensation.”

Brethren and sisters, this is a glorious dispensation. All other dispensations flow into it. All authorities, all powers, are centered in this dispensation in which we live. We are privileged to partake of these blessings through our faithfulness.

May I now say—very plainly and very emphatically—that we have the holy priesthood and that the keys of the kingdom of God are here. They are found only in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

(I saw this last week on Pinterest and throughout the lesson all I could think about how chocolate..I mean the priesthood blesses my life. Sorry the lesson recap is not much! )

Chapter 10, Our Search for Truth

Opening Song: page 272 Oh Say, What is Truth?
Lesson from the Teachings of the President: Our Search for Truth

President Smith was THIRSTY for gospel knowledge. By the time he was ten years old, he had read the Book of Mormon twice. He read anything he could get his hands on such as the standard works and all the church manuals. He had a gift of comprehension, analyzing, and comprehending. He also received great blessings from studying the scriptures such as: strength, love of God and his work, love of all mankind, and knowledge.

Sister Bosh then split us up in groups by the questions that she gave us. Then we discussed the questions. I will be putting some of the questions next and then adding some of her notes from the lesson plus some wise words from President Smith.

1. What blessings have you noticed as you have studied the gospel?

President Smith said, "So far as the philosophy and wisdom of the world are concerned, they mean nothing unless they conform to the revealed word of God. Any doctrine, whether it comes in the name of religion, science, philosophy, or whatever it may be, if it is in conflict with the revealed word of the Lord, will fail. It may appear plausible. It may be put before you in language that appeals and which you may not be able to answer. It may appear to be established by evidence that you cannot controvert, but all you need to do is to abide your time. Time will level all things. You will find that every doctrine, every principle, no matter how universally believed, if it is not in accord with the divine word of the Lord to his servants, will perish. Nor is it necessary for us to try to stretch the word of the Lord in a vain attempt to make it conform to these theories and teachings. The word of the Lord shall not pass away unfulfilled, but these false doctrines and theories will all fail. Truth, and only truth, will remain when all else has perished. "

2. What can we learn about the balance between secular and spiritual learning?

We should learn something new everyday. The Lord created us with inquiring minds and we should seek the truth. President Smith said,   "You all have inquiring minds and are seeking truth in many fields. I sincerely hope your greatest search is in the realm of spiritual things, because it is there that we are able to gain salvation and make the progress that leads to eternal life in our Father’s kingdom."

3. How can we help family members and others give priority to spiritual knowledge so they can pursue educational goals?

President Smith said, "We have been commanded to study the commandments he has given us in the Doctrine and Covenants, in the Book of Mormon and in all the scriptures, with the promise that “Whatever principle of intelligence we attain unto in this life, it will rise with us in the resurrection. And if a person gains more knowledge and intelligence in this life through his diligence and obedience than another, he will have so much the advantage in the world to come.” [D&C 130:18–19.]"

4. What can you do to improve your study of the scriptures?

Six Tips for Successful Scripture Study by Afton Nelson
1. Pray and seek the spirit
2. Look at the maps
3. Look for lists
4. Look for patterns and repititions
5. Look for commandments and promised blessings
6. Look for personal application

5. How can we share the teachings of living prophets with our families and others?

President Smith said, "We sometimes hear the complaint, “I haven’t time.” But we all have time to read and study which is our solemn duty. Can we not arrange to find at least fifteen minutes in each day to devote to systematic reading and reflection? This would be but a trifling amount of time, yet it would be one hour and forty-five minutes in a week; seven and one-half hours in a month of thirty days, and ninety-one hours and a quarter in the year. …"

6. What does it mean to "treasure" up the word of the Lord?

President Smith said, "Treasuring up his word is far more than merely reading it. To treasure it one must not only read and study, but seek in humility and obedience to do the commandments given, and gain the inspiration which the Holy Spirit will impart."

Get A Grip

Good evening sisters! I so wish I had a video camera in Relief Society to capture the terrific role play that was performed. I know you are not supposed to take video/pictures in the chapel, but it's ok in the relief society room right? Anyhow, sadly I don't.

Sister Holly Beck gave a fabulous lesson she titled Get A Grip. A grip on the iron rod that is. She started by having someone holding to the rod despite the mists of darkness, devil, and other worldly distractions.

What is the iron rod? In this lesson, it was the scriptures. She referenced 2 talks:

Hold-on by Ann M. Dibb from October 2009 conference

My-soul-delighteth-in-the-scriptures by Julie B. Beck from April 2004 conference

She related the story Ann Dibb started her talk with:

A number of years ago, a one-inch article in my local newspaper caught my attention, and I have remembered it ever since: “Four people were killed and seven workers were rescued after clinging for more than an hour to the underside of a 125-foot-high [38-m] bridge in St. Catharines, Ontario, [Canada,] after the scaffolding they were working on collapsed” (“News Capsules,” Deseret News, June 9, 1993, A2).
I was, and I continue to be, fascinated by this brief story. Shortly after reading this account, I called a family friend who lived in St. Catharines. She explained that the workers had been painting the Garden City Skyway bridge for about a year and were two weeks short of completing the project when the accident happened. After the accident, officials were asked why these men did not have any safety equipment. The answer was simple: they had the equipment; they just chose not to wear it. After the scaffolding gave way, the survivors held on to a one-inch (2.5-cm) lip of steel girder and stood on an eight-inch (20-cm) ledge of steel for over an hour until rescue teams could reach them. One survivor related that as he clung to the bridge, he thought a lot about his family. He said, “I just thank the Lord for me being here today. … It was pretty scary, I tell you” (in Rick Bogacz, “Skyway Horror,” Standard, June 9, 1993).

We have the safety equipment (scriptures) but are we using them? The scriptures are there for us and will help us draw strength. We must actively study the scriptures. It is not enough to just have them in our home or to skim them. We must hold fast to them and study them, making them apart of our everyday life.

These are ways our fellow sisters in relief society study their scriptures.

1. Prayer, pray to find the answers you are searching for
2. Journals and thoughts, keep track of your insights and feelings
3. Read it as a story
4. Study/read by subject. Use the topical guide
5. Figure out who is writing/speaking and familiarize your self with the people
6. Mark for different members of the Godhead
7. Study personally for you. Cross reference. Look up definitions of words
8. Schedule/set a time to read. Make it a priority
9. Mark every reference in the Book of Mormon to Christ
10. Color code your markings. ei - pink = love, green = facts/history
11. Study the scriptures along with the Preach my Gospel manual

Make the resolve to study the scriptures! Do so today, this week. Strengthen your desire to study them.
